By observing nature and how movement exists and is expressed, we can dramatically expand our ability to share what we feel in Argentine Tango music. You will rapidly advance your dance by using the movement qualities of nature’s 5 elements (earth, water, fire, air, & metal) to understand and move with a full range of dynamic Tango. This is musicality that honors each musical instrument, space between beats, and creates a luscious exciting way to Tango.
A world exists between the beats of Tango, and in this workshop, we explore how to feel, interpret and dance the space between the beats. Possessing the ability to change your quality of movement adds dimensions of expression, joy, creativity, interest and passion to your dance more than any vocabulary!
I believe one of the most sought after aspects of social dancing is feeling more alive, passionate, heartfelt to your partner and yourself. Passion is the soul of Tango itself. The more passion and feeling you can express and bring to your partner, the deeper your experience of the Tango will be. And of course, you will attract so many people wanting to dance with you, that your dance card will be filled.
This two-part workshop (2 75 min. classes) explores the foundational techniques of movement and the Essential Tango Skill sets to be able to move as the element or within the element. Besides working with several different skill sets, the Essential Tango Skill primarily used in Musicality in Motion is Quality of Movement. Quality of Movement is about expressing our feelings through moving our body with more than just stepping. Quality of movement becomes part of the juice, passion and fun in Tango.
EARTH
In Earth we work with weight shifts, the foundation of all Argentine Tango movement. We explore how we use our toes, feet, ankles to walk as a tanguero/a versus an Ape (our normal walk). Furthermore, we work with the pleasure and ease available in true weight shifts while loading the hip sockets and relaxing the free leg.

WATER
In Water we work with balance, extending through each movement, slowing everything down to a consistent speed, and the magic of what is available between the beats of the music that becomes accessible once a tanguero/a can move through water.

FIRE
In Fire we work with the importance of leading and following from the spine with an expansion in the back of the chest. Argentine Tango is not meant to be a stiff rigid dance, but full of rich movement from our entire body. The passion we feel in music can be expressed much better once we free up our spines and body.

AIR
In Air we work with precision in our feet, so moving fast with control is possible. To move faster, we need to work even more with the floor. Once you learn how to move more quickly while connecting with the floor, all Tango movement makes more sense.

METAL
In Metal we work with staccato, which is quick abrupt movement with a fuller engagement in the embrace. In addition, we learn to lead and follow from our knees as an extension of the center of our movement. Staccato does not have to be hard, but greater skill is needed to pull off this exciting musicality choice.
